Please Note: we won't store or distribute hops packaged in plastic or stored in less than perfect conditions. Our hops are broken down to retail packs, vacuumed down to exclude oxygen and stored in foil bags under perfect storage conditions to ensure longevity of freshness.
Grower Notes:
About Enigma™
Cultivated through our in-house breeding program, Enigma™ is the newest flavour hop in the Hop Products Australia family.
Typical descriptors don’t work very well for Enigma™. Our formal tasting sessions have given us interesting terms like ‘Pinot Gris’, ‘raspberries’, and ‘redcurrant’, through to rock melon and light tropical fruit. We don’t feel that any of these are really adequate, but we do know that the flavours and aromas are irresistibly appealing!
After winning over Aussie brewers with her beguiling ways in trial brews, we expanded our plantings at our Tasmanian farm in 2013, ready for her first generous crop in 2015.
Brew Tips
As you’d expect from one so cheeky and enchanting, Enigma™’s great fun to play with. A bit of a chameleon – different aspects of her enigmatic character shine, depending on how you use her.
Dry hop or add her late in the brew to maximise her flavour and aroma potential.
Our newest plays nicely with her sisters, taking the lead or supporting them in many beer styles. Equally she stands strong on her own.
Hop Story
Truly an enigma, our records show that our new girl is a descendant of the Swiss Tettnang hop, but not only does she grow like a North American hop, she throws up a range of flavours that are far removed from her heritage.

NHB Brewers Notes:
Early trials with Enigma after release at ANHC 4 were promising.
When used as a bittering addition, we found enigma a bit on the harsh side due to the high co-humulone. Different story when done as a SMaSH, on Simpsons Golden Promise, with all hops added ad 10 mins, 0 mins for whirlpool stand for 5 minutes and then dry hopped at 3g per L on day 7 of fermentation for 4 days, followed by 2 days at 0 degrees. Enigma shines when used as a late and dry hop either as a single variety or when used in conjunction with Nelson Sauvin or subtle amounts of Galaxy. Enigma gives a pleasant grape character with subtle berry notes and hints of spice.
Bound to please in a wide range of beers, but most popular in Australian Pale Ales, and American Pale Ales. Experimental brews also revealed some very pleasant subtle flavours when done in a new age hoppy lager. Brewed at 15 IBU, the beer is hopped with 1g per litre of enigma at whirlpool stand stand for 5 minutes. OG 1.044 Fermented on 2 x packs 34/70 yeast, with yeast dropped out on day 4, then again daily from day 12. Added 1g per L dry hop post D rest and chilled the beer to 0 deg C for the dry hop period of 10 days. Made for a very pleasant and subtle hop character in a refreshing summer lager.
