Sparging is an important part of the brewing process to achieve a high level of extraction efficiency. After mashing, liquid malt is trapped within the grainbed and needs to be removed with as little disturbance of the grainbed as possible to maintain good filtration. With the upper screen in place on the Grainfather Unit, the sparge water can be poured gently over the plate and it will diffuse gently throughout the grain bed, washing the available malt through the grains and filtering out to the boiler.
Excessive sparging or excessive high temperatures can lead to unwanted tannins being released causing astringent notes in your finished beer.
